Medicare Numbers Changing
CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) has announced that they will be changing everyone’s Medicare number and of course
Who: Everyone on Medicare
What: Removing social security numbers from Medicare cards
When: Between April 2018 and April 2019
Where: The Great US of A
Was this a part of the health care law (Obamacare)??? Nope. More specifically “The Medicare Access and CHIP Re-authorization Act of 2015”. As a side note just that ACT is 95 pages of pure pleasure reading, can you see the sarcasm??
A part of that ACT is the Social Security Number Removal Initiative or SSNRI for short. (Leave it to the US Government to create an acronym for everything).
I for one am glad to see that they will be removing the social security number from the Medicare cards. I do think it will help prevent some identity theft. However, with change comes problems (growing pains). I can think of the cards getting lost in the mail, or if thieves know that will be mailing the Medicare cards, I can see them getting stolen out of mailboxes to do nefarious things with them.
Anyways, I hope that they are thinking of some of the risks associated with this change, as well as get out education materials to the Medicare beneficiaries, and multiple ways to communicate issues with the new cards. Okay
